Deming

I was born in a small town, and I live[d] in a small town...had myself a ball in that small town...
Born a preemie in Oklahoma while Mom visiting her mother, lived in Kansas until 7, moved to the wild west (Ely) in 1962 then McGill in 1963. Proud McGill Tiger—8th grade champs in Pop Warner football, basketball & track. Proud WPHS Bobcat--band (1 year), football (4 years), wrestling (3 years) & baseball (2 years). Missed out on being a champion by not playing baseball my junior year when our team won state—a big regret; however, I had innumerable laughs & great times with many friends all four years.

Suddenly, it became...I’m 18, and I don’t know what I want...and School’s Out for Summer...
Entered University of Nevada, Reno August 1973 and graduated December 1977 with Bachelors of Science Mining Engineering. Lincoln Hall dorm life with Johnny Caviglia as roommate, Donald Peterson & Roger Knighton as dorm mates, and many other WPHS classmates/friends in residence in White Pine, Nye & Manzanita Halls. Later lived with Johnny + Mike Stanko in off campus housing. When not in class or studying, we enjoyed time either motorcycle riding (...get your motor running...), hunting, skiing, and/or beer drinking. Perhaps...I’m wasted and I can’t find my way home... happened a few times, but we managed to survive.

Moved to Spokane, Washington from 1978—1983 to work at Dawn Mining Company as Mine Engineer & Environmental Engineer at uranium mine/mill until the No Nukes and China Syndrome mantra took hold and the facility barred its doors. Relocated to Magma Copper Company copper mine/processing facility near Tucson, Arizona for work from 1983—1986 + 1988--1996, eventually becoming Corporate Manager Environmental Affairs. During 1986—1988 I worked for parent company Newmont Mining Corporation as Environmental Engineer. Since 1996 I’ve had my sole-proprietor Mining/Environmental Engineering consulting practice. I’ve also been owner/president of a contract mining firm named Coyote Stone supplying sandstone for Thirstystone coasters (1999-2005), plus owner/president of aggregate company (money pit) Coronado Group (1999-2007).

While in Tucson I attended University of Arizona part-time from 1985—1989 and graduated with a Masters of Business Administration degree (Entrepreneurship/Finance concentration), including winning first place in the annual business plans competition.

My personal life included being married to my first wife Valera between 1987—1997, with our son Bobby born in 1988. Years were spent coaching his little league baseball & soccer teams + friend’s daughter’s softball teams. In 2011...I Found Love, Love in the Nick of Time...upon meeting Terry with us marrying in 2017. I gained two daughters Candice & Alexis as a result, and we now have two granddaughters Violet & Azalea, with one current + one pending son-in-law. We’ve Got Some Ocean Property in Arizona...with the only sandy beach being a wash bank, and a sea of untrimmed catclaw. We have 2 chihuahuas, 9 chickens & yard work to keep us active at home. Travel has included being...On the Road Again...seeing Willie in Mississippi; saying ...Goodbye Yellow Brick Road...to Elton in Phoenix; being...Wasted Away in Margaritaville...in Virgin Islands; snowmobiling in Yellowstone; beaching in Mexico; living ...Rocky Mountain High...across Colorado skiing, fishing & basking in hot springs; motorcycling to/from Ohio; biting the Big Apple; watching the frogs jump in Mark Twain’s Calavares County; attending Blues Festivals; and innumerable other ramblings. I also return to White Pine County a few months each year to care for my 96-year old mother.

I’m so proud and thankful for all the work our Reunion Committee did in planning such a grand event for this summer, and look forward the class of 1973 gathering and our common recollections of ...What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been!
